"Men of a Certain Age" explored the small triumphs and daily heartbreaks that make up so much of everyday life, and the TNT show did all that with grace, insight and a trio of stunningly subtle and wonderful performances from Ray Romano, Andre Braugher and Scott Bakula. It was a wise, funny, rewarding and wonderfully rueful show for men and women of all ages.

It stars Scott's The Informant co-star, Joel McHale, and of course, Chevy Chase, as well as Alison Brie who plays Pete Campbell's wife Trudy on Mad Men. Its recent Christmas Musical, lampooning GLEE left and right, was awesome. (We just have to wait till NBC decides where to put the rest of season 3.)

Last night's ep of Men of a Certain Age was watched live, which made it impossible to pause when the roommate asked me to. I missed some dialog I will have to rewatch tonight. I did, however, read Sepinwall (on the phone with my friend) after the ep. As far as I can tell, he's liking it enough that it's in his rotation and he's watching the screeners and writing the reviews in advance - it was up at 11:03pm ET last night.

The one thing I regret is reading or watching any interviews/clips -- something happened I would rather have been surprised by.

Houston Chronicle praises MOCA.

Most Surprising Series: Men of a Certain Age on TNT. Did anybody see this coming? The drama, starring Ray Romano, Andre Braugher and Scott Bakula, managed to be poignant and funny (an incredibly difficult mix to get exactly right) about men having midlife crises. Easily the best portrayal on television of men dealing with their second acts and all the people -- friends, wives, lovers, kids -- who populate that stretch.

Review -- Men of a Certain Age... is... superb television.

Review -- Z on TV -- Men of A Certain Age

Let me tell you how much I like TNT's new drama series, "Men of a Certain Age." The cable channel sent me five hours worth of screeners, and I watched all five back-to-back Saturday -- and would have watched another five hours of the series if they had sent them.

Outside of Tony Soprano, middle-aged, existential male angst has rarely been explored with any intelligence or sensitivity on TV. But it is here.

Then, there is the acting. Five minutes into the pilot, I believed totally in this world, these characters and their lives.

Bakula is the character that is going to get critics calling this series "Sex and the City" for baby boomer men. But that's not really an apt description -- too simplistic and glib. Bakula's Terry just seems to enjoy women -- and to talk unselfconsciously about the physical ways he enjoys them. In the fifth episode, when he starts to show more depth and soul, Bakula makes you believe in that part of Terry's character, too.

I wasn't going to do this, but I am getting so wound up remembering how much I enjoyed watching the show

...I'm sure it's tempting to look at the cast of "Men of a Certain Age"... and say Romano has no business acting in a drama opposite Andre Braugher and Scott Bakula...

What makes this show so great is how realistically written it is. Instead of soap opera drama or insane plot twists, it takes situations that many people can relate to. There aren’t many people who can relate to a doctor who has an unhealthy, on again then off again relationship with a man who has an evil twin, but they can understand a man who despises his job, but knows he must keep it to care for his family
